The Arts

Dancing, singing, drawing, painting, field trips, and many other wonderful arts activities become even more educational and wonderful when done with cross-age learning!

 

 


Title of Lesson: Singing

Grade Range: Any

Introduction:
Each class learns one song and teaches it to the other.
Materials needed:
None needed. (possibly, instruments or CD player.)

Methodology

1. In own classrooms, each class learns a song.
2. During Buddy time, little buddies sing their song, as a group, for big buddies.
3. Teaching: Little buddies sing a line and Big buddies echo. Do this 2 or 3 times.
4. Sing song together.
5. Big buddies sing for little buddies.
6. Teaching: Big buddies sing a line and Little buddies echo. Do this 2 or 3 times.
7. Sing song together.

Future buddy times: As settling or any time, they can sing through one or 2 or the songs.


Title of Lesson: Math to Art

Grade Range: K-6
Introduction:
A Kgn and 2nd grade group team constructed multiple patterns, using pattern blocks, which were later reconstructed in chalk at the community event - Italian Street Painting Festival

Materials needed:
Pattern blocks, pastels, pattern block stickers.

Methodology
2nd graders were instructed as to key vocabulary words to use while creating patterns with their little buddies. One meeting was used to explore the blocks and options. The second meeting, a pattern was created and transferred (remade) with pattern block stickers. These were laminated and used for a tile, quilt, grid at the street painting. Buddies and families came and worked together. A hit - a beautiful hit!


Title of Lesson: Folk Dances

Grade Range: 1st+4th or 2nd+5th
Introduction:
Big buddies teaching little buddies folk dances can be used for Social Studies, Arts, and/or PE.

Materials needed: Tape recorder, music, possibly a video tape recorder and TV

Methodology:

1. Big buddies learn folk dances fitting with local history. The class picks a favorite (fairly simple) dance to teach to the little buddy class.

2. Big buddies teach their little buddies the dance.

3. Enjoy dancing together.

Option: Videotape the buddies dancing the dance 3 or 4 times. Show it at Open House.
